Giganews to Host Mozilla Newsgroups

Gervase Markham has announced that Giganews have agreed to to host the Mozilla newsgroups. Established in 1994, Giganews is one of the largest newsgroup providers, supplying Usenet feeds to both individuals and ISPs. The move to a new server also means that the newsgroup hierarchy can be revised and Gerv has updated the list of proposed Mozilla newsgroups to reflect the current plans. Comments are welcome on what is now believed to be the final draft of the list (unlike the previous final drafts, this might actually be the last one).

At present, the Mozilla newsgroups are hosted on Netscape's news server, as they have been since the Mozilla project first began in 1998. The plans to move the newsgroups to a new server and reorganise the hierarchy have been quite literally years in the making, with Gerv's first proposed newsgroup list being published in 2000. With the announcement of the Giganews hosting deal, it now finally seems likely that the promised changes will be made soon.

See Chris Ilias' history of the Mozilla newsgroups for more details about how the current arrangements came into being.
