Mozilla Developer Center in Beta

Deb Richardson has announced that the Mozilla Developer Center is now in beta at developer.mozilla.org. Known as Devmo to its friends, the Mozilla Developer Center is a new site for coders wishing to build upon the Mozilla platform. There's documentation and resources for many groups, including extension authors, Web developers and localisers.

Much of the site is run as a collection of wikis, powered by the MediaWiki software. Anyone can sign up for an account and edit the documentation, which is available in nine languages (the English language wiki currently has the most complete information). A lot of the initial documentation has been migrated across from the old Netscape DevEdge site, which is now defunct. Most of the content is available under a Creative Commons licence, with code samples released under the MIT License (see the Devmo Copyrights page for details).

In addition to all the documentation, the Mozilla Developer Center also hosts two weblogs. The Mozilla Developer News weblog posts regular updates for Mozilla developers, including Roadmap schedules and release plans, while MDC Webwatch links to useful resources from across the Web.

The Mozilla Developer Center has been available in an alpha state for several months now, under the developer.mozilla.org name. Over the past few weeks, the site has edged closer to its public launch, moving to its current domain name and getting a visual makeover with a new skin. However, the Mozilla Developer Center is still in beta, so any problems should be filed in Bugzilla under the developer.mozilla.org component. Problems with wiki-based documentation can be fixed by simply creating a Devmo account and editing the page in question.

Deb has spearheaded the Devmo project since earlier this year and she often posts news, updates and requests for help on her weblog. Recent entries of interest include a post about Devmo's move from alpha to beta status in late July, details about the MDC Webwatch weblog and a call for article ideas and writers. The Mozilla Developer Center itself has a page about contributing to Devmo.

Currently, the lead article on the Mozilla Developer Center is an introduction to Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 for developers, which is a good point from which to start exploring. Other content can be accessed from the Mozilla Developer Center Contents page.
